A Kitchen Hoor's Adventures | Alsatian Slow Cooker Pork Dinner - Guest Post on A Daily Dish of Life

Michelle over at A Daily Dish of Life asked me to guest post today.  She has an awesome blog chock full of goodness.

I don’t know about you, but we use our slow cooker at least one night a week almost every week. It’s not easy coming up with delicious and unique meals every week for the slow cooker. TRUST me when I say this. But this Alsatian Slow Cooker Pork Dinner is definitely deliciously unique. At least for us.

I digress…

There’s a famous restaurant in the DC area that is prized for its historic and foodie presence. The Inn at Little Washington is one of the “must eat” places in this area. And I know why. You see, Mom and DSD (dear step-dad) took us there for our Christmas-ish dinner one year. It was lunch, which was feasible as far as price goes. Dinner would have seriously been out of the question budget wise. Not that it’s that expensive, but it kind of is. LOL If you’re in the area and want an excellent dining experience, I highly recommend the Inn at Little Washington.

There was delicious food had by all. Honestly, it was a year ago so I can’t remember what everyone ate, but I do remember what I ordered. I chose the Alsatian sausage platter. It had the most delicious sausages and the most interesting kraut I’ve ever tasted. It was nothing…NOTHING like the sauerkraut you get in the stores. Duh! It had a sweet tangy taste to it and was full of herbal notes. Truly a culinary masterpiece in the kraut department! They apparently make it from scratch in the restaurant, so you can’t get it anywhere but there. Since then, I’ve wanted to try something similar in flavor and style. This recipe is just that.

You see, I was trying to figure out what to make for our slow cooker meal that week. We make a slow cooker meal almost every week of the year on our meal plan. It’s good to have a meal plan. It’s easier to create recipes for a selection of categories than just trying to think up 6 meals for the week.

Our meal plan looks like this:
  • Monday – Meatless Main
  • Tuesday – Slow Cooker Meal
  • Wednesday – 30 minutes (or a little more) Meal
  • Thursday – Entree salad
  • Saturday – Quick and easy
  • Sunday – #SundaySupper

Sometime I switch up the salad and the slow cooker meal depending on whether I’ve remembered to take something out for the slow cooker meal, but for the most part, these are the types of meals we make every week. No, it doesn’t limit us. If you hop back over to my blog you will see the wide selection of recipes and flavors for our meals. For me, it just makes creating a menu that much easier. I select a recipe for each of 4 categories weeknights, then a super quick Saturday night and deliciously wholesome and not so quick meal on Sunday. Sunday is for lasagna, steaks, fish; items that either takes longer than 45 minutes to cook or requires the freshest of ingredients to cook.

But enough about that, let’s talk about this Alsatian Slow Cooker Pork Dinner. It’s super simple! It does use the canned variety of sauerkraut, but with some caraway seeds and apple juice concentrate you can change the flavor of the kraut and make it this mildly sweet and tangy delicious element to this dish. Add in the carrots and potatoes and you have a deliciously simple, and tasty, slow cooker meal for your family. I’d be willing to bet you have everything but the kraut in your kitchen already.

So, what are you waiting for? Head to your kitchen RIGHT NOW and throw this in your slow cooker. You’ll have dinner waiting for you when you get home and not even have to work up a sweat in this summer heat to make it! It’s a win/win! What? You don’t have one of those programmable slow cookers? WHY NOT? Just kidding. I don’t either. I have a $10 vacation timer that I use to make mine “programmable” but, shh! Don’t tell the slow cooker manufacturers that. They think you need a programmable one. Mine is, just olde skool programmable. *snort*

Well, dear A Dish of Daily Life readers, I hope you enjoyed my witty (or not so witty) banter and can’t wait to read some more! I hope at least I’ve entertained you for a minute or two and and try out this deliciously simple weeknight meal.
