It’s #BrunchWeek!!  I’m so excited.  I look forward to this event every year.  There’s so many delicious recipes and amazing giveaways to be had this week.  Forty bloggers have gotten together and will be sharing over 150 recipes this week!  I know.  That’s INSANE!  You’re, like, set for YEARS worth of brunches with this one event.

Did you follow #BrunchWeek last year?  I made some killer recipes last year including my first bubble up recipe.  My Bubble Up Denver Breakfast Bake was delicious.  The hubs loved it and said we could have that all the time.  So, what do I do this year?  Make another bubble up.  Not only are they delicious, but they’re prep friendly.

I hear ya.  You’re saying, “But Christie, sausage gravy isn’t easy to whip up!”  I’m here to tell ya, yes it is!  It took me maybe 15 minutes to whip up.  And you can easily make it before hand and assemble the next day.  Simply reheat the gravy and thin it a little with some milk if need be and pour over the biscuits.  Simple as that!

I’m a southern girl.  I practically grew up on the biscuits and gravy.  It was a weekend staple for breakfast frequently.  It’s a rather inexpensive meal to make.  Most of the ingredients are things you have on hand anyway.  And it’s a hearty and delicious meal for anyone.

Here’s the kicker.  I used turkey sausage to save some of the calories and fat of traditional pork sausage.  Yes.  It still had that delicious sausage gravy flavor.  It had that richness that I was looking for in sausage gravy.  I was just as surprised as you are because I didn’t think it would taste as good as I had hoped.

I haven’t made sausage gravy and biscuits in years.  Many years.  The hubs and I have been together almost 9 years and I think I’ve made it once.  Which sucks because the hubs usually orders sausage gravy when we go out to breakfast.  I feel bad.  But then again, we don’t usually do lots of breakfast at home.  So, I think I’m okay?  Right?

Anyway.

This has all the flavors of delicious sausage gravy and biscuits that I grew up with as a kid.  I made a few additions for a more delicious casserole.  I added cheese.  Because, well, isn’t everything better with cheese?  I also added some garlic powder because I think it makes everything better except for desserts.  I think I put garlic powder in or on almost everything.

You can’t tell you don’t want to grab that fork and dig in.  *I* want to grab that fork and dig in and I had it for dinner and then lunch twice.  It was so tasty, hearty, sausage-y, and biscuit-y.  I like making up words.

That bowl is packed with bites of sausage, bits of biscuits, creamy gravy, and sharp cheese.  Biscuits and Gravy Bubble Up is a perfect brunch casserole full of great southern flavors and complete comfort.

When was the last time you made biscuits and gravy?  Or have you ever made them?

Ingredients

  • 20 ounces turkey breakfast sausage links
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces southern style canned biscuits
  • 1 cup shredded, seriously sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Heat a large skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat. Using a sharp knife, split the casings and remove the sausage. Crumble into the pan and cook until brown. Drain the meat and save the juices.
  3. Return the juices to pan. Sprinkle the flour over the juice and stir with a whisk until combined. Pour half the milk into the pan and stir until thickened. Add remaining milk a little bit a time until the desired thickness is achieved.
  4. Add the sausage back to the pan, stir to combine, and keep warm.
  5. Spray a 9 by 13 casserole dish with cooking spray. Set aside.
  6. Cut the biscuits into quarters and place a single layer in the bottom of the casserole dish. Top with half of the cheese and half of the gravy.
  7. Top with remaining biscuits, cheese, and gravy. Bake uncovered at 350 for 45 to 50 minutes or until the biscuits are cooked through. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

  1. I love biscuits and gravy, but I never make it either. Why is that? This looks like a great way to get the flavors I love and so much more!
