Innercise your way to being #NeuroGymFit

This was going to be the longest post ever!  However, I decided to re-write it the day it was due.  Yeah, I’m spontaneous like that.  I realized that I should explain why I took the Weight Loss Quiz from NeuroGym.  So, here goes!

Unless you’re new to my blog, you know that I struggle with my weight.  I have struggled with my weight my whole life.  At one point I was down to 175 which is the lowest I’ve weighed since I was in elementary school.  I know.  It’s sad, but that was my life.

I know this post isn’t about recipes or food.  This post is about how I see and perceive food and myself.  You’re going to get to know more about me than I’ve shared before.  So, pull up a chair and have a seat.  We’re gonna chat about weight and body image.

Ever since I can remember I’ve been in larger kid clothes.  As a kindergartner, I was wearing size 6 or 7.  As a 5th grader, I was wearing size 12 or so.  All throughout high school and even today, I’m in the women’s or plus size section.  I call it the fat chick or heffer section.  Probably not the best thing to do to myself.

You see how I self-sabotage?  I make fun of myself the way I’ve been made fun of my entire life.  It makes it not hurt as much when people look down at me or judge me for being overweight.  “Well, just eat less or exercise!”  These sound practical.  And I did do that!  For a few years.  But, if I don’t stay on top of it and weigh and measure everything I eat, I can’t not overeat.

And, well, those who have read my blog know I have issues with my knees and feet.  This makes basic walking difficult on good days.  Which really sucks.  Because I REALLY want to get back to hiking.  I’m working towards that.  But that’s only part of the issue.

For decades now, I’ve known that there’s no off button with me and food.  I was struggling with trying to figure out how to reset that “You are done eating now.  You don’t need to eat more” button that triggers when a normal person has finished eating.  When I saw the NeuroGym Weight Loss Quiz, I had to take it and participate in this campaign.

NeuroGym has helped me in so many ways already!  And it’s only been two weeks.  I’ve learned about my weight set point which is what your mind tells your body it needs to look like.  Since I’ve been teased for so long, this is what my mind says my body should look like and my mind sabotages any attempts to lose and keep weight off.

NeuroGym has taught me about triggers and facing them.  It’s taught me about fears and facing them.  It’s given me not just some mental guidance but some powerful visual guidance on how to overcome these hurdles and obstacles that are keeping me from losing the weight I want permanently.

This is the type of mental training I’ve needed to not only lose the weight, but prepare myself for losing it and keeping it off.  NeuroGym teaches you how to realize what is going on first after it happens, then while it’s happening, and finally to see it before it happens.  So, I can see when my triggers are coming up and just let those triggers go away!

This experience has been very eye-opening for me and I can’t wait to get through the rest of the program.  If you’re struggling or have struggled with weight like I have, I have some words of advice for you.  First, take the NeuroGym Weight Loss Quiz.  Then participate in the Winning the Game of Weight Loss Webinar which, for me, was the light bulb that came on regarding my weight and issues with body image.

I love the definition of Innercise: “Innercises are science based techniques to help individuals unlock their brain’s fullest potential so they let go of the mental and emotional blocks that prevents him from losing weight and keeping it off.”  These techniques and innercises are part of why this program has helped me.  And, you know what’s the best part??  When you purchase the program, you have ACCESS FOR LIFE!  There’s no other program out there that does that.  At least not that I know of.

Finally, here’s 10 things you can do right now, to change your mind about your body and help you to Win  the Game of Weight Loss!

1 – Stop comparing yourself to others.  Honestly.  You are you.  They are not you.  Stop trying to look like them because you can’t. You won’t.  Hating your body doesn’t change your body.  I’ve been guilty of this for decades.  Okay, let’s be real; probably all of my life.  Because ALL of my life I’ve been overweight, obese or some form of both.

2 – Focus on your accomplishments!  This doesn’t have to be in weight loss or exercise.  Maybe it’s a work accomplishment or a personal goal that you met or a recipe that won a contest or went viral on Instagram.  When I’m focused on things that I LOVE to do and I’m good at I don’t usually think about cravings or food.  Well, unless I’m cooking something like macarons!  Now that’s an accomplishment I’m proud of; being able to make those finicky cookies.

3 – Stop looking at ads!  Most of the print ads and even some of the commercials are probably altered.  I’m sure those skinny models have butt pimples and acne.  They’re not perfect.  They have baggage from bad relationships.  I’m sure they were grounded just like we were.

4 – Only you can make you feel bad about yourself.  Actually, only you can make you feel anything!  You have control over your emotions; in theory.  There is nothing anyone can do to MAKE you feel a certain way.  You have to allow yourself to feel that way.  No one can force feelings on you.  Once we own that and realize it, we can change how we react and feel.

5 – Take a tip from Elsa and LET IT GO!!  Whatever has happened in the past, whatever baggage you’re carrying with you right now you need to let it go!!  All the name calling and people making fun of you when you were a kid growing up as overweight; LET IT GO!  The teasing and the judgement from people as you ate your lunch in the cafeteria; LET IT GO!  All those looks down their noses at you in a boutique for skinny people; LET IT GO!  Once you get past that you can stop sabotaging your efforts to gain the image and body you want and know you can have.

6 – Surround yourself with people who appreciate you and support you! Not those who judge you or are toxic to you.  We all have those friends.  Those friends that we keep around because we feel we have to for a certain social status.  They comment on what you’re eating or your menu choices.  These friends are dietitians that know what you should eat and how you should eat it to lose weight.  Sarcasm there, dear readers.

7 – Accept yourself as you are!  If you can’t love everything about you, and honestly who can, then simply accept those parts you don’t like as part of who you are.  Then, you can begin to LOVE who you truly are.  I know.  This is probably the hardest part for me.  I focus too much on what I don’t like that I forget to focus on what I do like.  Make a list!  Keep it near you or in your pocket so when you start to go down that negative road you can pull it out and go over it again and again.

8 – Work on resetting your weight set point.  This is the hardest one for me.  I grew up as a charter member of the clean plate club.  If I put it on there, I had to eat it.  Even just last week, I binged on Chinese food.  And I felt horrible and miserable.  I wondered why I was sabotaging my efforts to change myself and reset my weight set point.  Now that I realize the trigger points, I can work with myself towards fixing this issue.

9 – Be assertive!  Yeah.  I know.  I think I’m telling myself this one more than for your benefit.  When you’re like me and have been fat – yes!  I said it FAT – my whole life, you tend to not draw attention to yourself.  You become a wall flower that’s in the background and just goes with the flow.  Don’t do this anymore!  When you’re assertive, you start to gain confidence!  You have a voice and people will listen to you.  When they start listening to you they will see you the way you want to be seen

10 – Take time for yourself to enjoy yourself.  I don’t mean become a hermit, but do something you enjoy that makes you feel good about yourself.  If that’s a movie, a walk in the park, or a mani pedi, DO IT!  Do those things that you truly enjoy to make you feel good about yourself.

Now, when you’re ready, take the Weight Loss Quiz and start to Innercise your way to being #NeuroGymFit!  I suggest following NeuroGym on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.  Then follow John Assaraf on Twitter and Instagram to stay up to date on all the wonderful Innercises he has to offer.

  1. This is really interesting- I think unless you struggle with this, people don’t always get it. Most of my own “relationship” with food is completely connected to my emotions and my mind, so I think this would be an interesting approach for sure. Just so you know, you are not alone in this- people all shapes and sizes struggle with this~ Good post.

    1. Thank you! I have struggled my whole life. I don’t really think I’m an emotional eater. I just don’t know when to stop. Maybe that is an emotional response, but I don’t get depressed and eat or stressed and eat. The whole reset your weight set point really does apply to me. and I can’t wait to figure out how to do that with my mind!

  2. Looking at things differently has always been harder than I expected. I know it’s in my mind, but I definitely need to work on the things as you suggested! (client)

    1. I think I was sharing that more for me than for anything. I need to keep these on my corkboard at work to make sure I keep them in the forefront of my mind.
